GIGIG Road Trip: Day 2

Day 2 started with a big breakfast in Saratoga and continued with a scenic drive up 280 to visit my brother (aka The Burritoeater) in San Francisco. The six of us lunched in Union Square (nary a burrito in sight), then caught an electric streetcar to Fisherman’s Wharf to do the tourist thing. (The lines for the cable cars were longer than our vacation, so we opted out). Our ride was enjoyable, and had an international flavor, since San Francisco has imported retired streetcars from all over the world to fill out their fleet. The car we rode today used to ply streets somewhere in Italy (obviously NOT Naples).

But our goal was Santa Rosa, so we said our good-byes and once again headed north. We arrived around seven, checked into the Hyatt Vineyard Creek, and headed out for dinner at a local favorite: Mary’s Pizza Shack. Public Skating hours at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena start at 12:30 tomorrow, and we’ll be there with skates on. More later!

  1. what is / are the origins of “nary” and is it a shortened form of the yellow birdlike animal?

  2. when you answer about nary, please also share with us if you were able to answer without looking it up. the answer is imporant, but so is the way the answer was delivered…

  3. I believe nary grew out of “ne’r,” or “ne’re” as in “ne’r do well,” but I’m happy to look it up for you.
